Most Japan travel advice is assembled from other Japan travel advice. You can tell, because it goes stale the moment a rail pass changes price or a hotel changes hands. We started this site to answer the questions visiting friends keep asking us. Is the JR Pass still worth it after the hikes? What is actually worth bringing home? Which Shinjuku hotel earns its rate, and which famous ryokan is coasting on its name?

Three things get most of our attention.

Transport comes first, because that is where travel budgets leak. We run the math on the nationwide JR Pass, on the regional passes that quietly beat it, on IC cards, and on the trips where a plain ticket wins outright.

Shopping is second. Some things really are better or cheaper here: kitchen knives, tea, stationery. Much of the standard souvenir list is not. We tell you which is which, with prices in yen and dollars.

Hotels and ryokan are third. Real rates, real trade-offs, no sponsored gloss.

A word on how we review. When we have stayed somewhere or used something ourselves, we say so and we tell you when. When a guide is built from official pricing, current listings, and reports from other travelers, we say that too. We would rather show you where the information came from than dress every review up as a personal stay. Prices and rail rules here change often, so every number carries the month we checked it.
